Week 13 - Burst My Bubble

I was transferred to a new clinic of perinatal hematologists who were supposed to be able to better handle my clotting disorder.  My first appointment was this morning, so I arrived early and was a bit anxious about what to expect. In my head, and based on romantic comedies, I had pictured my pre-natal doctor experience to be in an office that sort of looked like I was entering someone's living room, where I would be treated and honored as a pregnant queen who was sure to be the first woman ever to give birth to twins.

You might imagine my disappointment, when entering the sterile, hospital like environment.  Three bells rang when I entered the office and the doors slammed behind me like I had just entered prison.  I then had to knock on a frosted sliding window to get the attention of the receptionist.  Luckily for me, the office had just moved fully to an electronic system and the entire office was learning a new system.  Each phase of my appointment was monitored by system specialists who were training the staff.  It was a less than personal experience.

The appointment lasted about two and a half hours. At one point a nurse came in and said "Our staff are going to lunch, can you leave for a bit and come back so we can finish the appointment?"
Ahh, yes, sorry for being such a pain in the ass and showing up during regular business hours for my scheduled appointment...

So I went to the cafe downstairs for 30 minutes.  When I came back a midwife, a system trainer and another midwife (who was learning the system as well) joined together to teach me how to give myself a shot of lovonox (a blood thinner) every day.  The midwife says "you're gonna want to shoot yourself in a fatty area, you look pretty trim, but if you can find a love handle, just shoot it into that."  Bless her heart "...if you can find a love handle..."  Don't worry my friend, I've got two.

So things ended on a good note.  The staff were friendly despite the learning curve they were dealing with, and they have us all set up to work with a team of doctors throughout the pregnancy.  I feel comfortable with the doctors at this clinic and I made sure to make my next appointment right away at 9am when they open as to not interfere with their lunch schedule.

In other news,
I am hungry around the clock  I always have raw almonds or fruit snacks with me because when I can't eat I get mean.

My body is changing like crazy in all kinds of unexpected and not wonderful ways.  A patient of mine at my internship said "oh wow I can see your baby bump" and I didn't have the heart to tell her that was just my chubby stomach. To be honest, I can't really tell what is the babies and what is just the effect of my expanded diet.  Evan and I joke that the only reason I don't get up in the middle of the night to eat is because our refrigerator makes a loud squeaking noise when it's opened and I'm afraid of waking him.  That might be true.

That's about all I have for updates today.  We started taking pictures, below is our first photo, which is week 13.
13 Weeks

Lots of Love,
Bree and Evan
